Perry Sheriff Scott Montgomery asks the citizens of Perry County please beware we have some con artist going around our county trying to pave your driveways, fix your roofs, etc. Con artist come around about once a year or after a storm hits our area. Usually their work is not any good. For example if you need some roof sealant put on your roof, what they put on there lasts till the next heavy rain, then washes off. Another example is with the pavement, they tell you it will be so many inches thick and it turns out its only half of what they promised you, and/or it doesn’t settle right and after about a year it breaks apart on you. Also at first they quote you a price and after the job is complete they want more money. Also there has been occasions where you pay them with a check up front, they go cash it and you never see them again.
We also just had a case where one of our citizens posted his 4-wheeler for sell on Craig’s list. Some guy shows up to buy it, paid with a cashiers check. The seller deposits the check into his account, four days later the bank notifies him that the check was counterfeit. Never take a check unless you know for a fact that it is good, or go with them to their bank and cash it before you give them the property. The guy who bought the four wheeler used a track phone, which is not traceable. We were lucky because the owner of the four wheeler found his four wheeler on Craig’s list and we were able to return it back to him with help from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. The guy who had it in Marion County was a victim as well, he had bought it from a guy, who had bought it from our bad guy off Craig’s list as well.
Were not talking about local contractors, the majority of them are reputable. It’s the out-of-towners that we have to watch, think about it if they were reputable people, you would be calling them instead of them calling on you.
I suggest any type of work you need around your home, you should use local contractors or contractors listed in the yellow pages.
